The most interesting tattoo was one with the text “Der Teufel soll mein Führer sein”, which means “The devil will be my guide”. On the dried skin the contours of tattoos were visible, the pieces of skin were placed in a combination of alcohol and water and this made the tattoos clearly visible again. The fingerprints couldn’t be matched to anyone in databases. When they unroll the carpet they find a completely mummified body.Īn investigation was launched due to the lack of identification and the suspicious circumstances. In the basement, under a pile of trash and dirt, they found a carpet, bound together with a garden hose. In the winter of 1982 some construction workers had to strip the whole building in preparation of renovations. In this period of time in a monumental building in the centre of Amsterdam a mystery unravels that still hasn’t been solved. So to describe Amsterdam in this time period we need a few words : youth that demand affordable places to live, riots, punk, rock & roll and anarchy. The detectives that were actually involved with the case, witnesses that found the body and the police granted their help in creating this episode, leading to a high valued credibility. The following information is mostly based on this show’s information. In 2015 a Dutch television show called “Graf zonder naam” meaning “Grave Without a Name” dedicated an episode to this case. And thus the police in Amsterdam are still trying to find out the identity of this mummy that was found almost 40 years ago in the basement of a monumental building. The case was placed on the calendar in 2018, this led to about 20 tips being called in since then, however so far this hasn’t led to the identification of the unknown man. It said "Der Teufel soll mein Führer sein!" He had an Indian head on the left forearm and on the back a tattoo of a hand with a burning candle on it. A tattoo of a heart was visible on the right forearm. He had a butterfly tattoo on the inside of the right leg. It was a white man with a height of 1.83 m (5 ft 11) The victim had a number of remarkable tattoos on his body. Unfortunately, that did not yield anything. To find out the identity of the man, research was carried out in many European countries. This was wrapped in a carpet on the plot at “Oudezijds Achterburgwal 143” (address). “On 11 January 1982 in Amsterdam the remains of an unknown man were found under a pile of dirt. The cold case calendar describes the case as follows: These calendars are also available online. This calendar is made annually and spread amongst inmates in the whole country. This case, like many of my previous posts, was placed on the Cold Case calendar in the Netherlands. This unidentified deceased individual has been given many names throughout the years, such as The Mummy of Amsterdam or The Devil from Germany. The modern day mummy, unidentified since 1982. Today i’m going share the story, or what we know so far, about one of these unidentified deceasaed persons from my home country of the Netherlands where the police refers to a John or Jane Doe as “Nomen Nescio” which is latin for “I don’t know the name” or “Name Unknown”. No one to mourn over you, no one to tell who you were, and in some cases a killer who escaped justice. In the US is around 40.000 at any given time, and these numbers just make me so incredibly sad. In my home country of the Netherlands there are somewhere between 300 and 400 unidentified deceased persons at any given time.
